Representing Algeria and My American University in a Marathon

I am thrilled to announce that this year I had the privilege of representing not just the UNC Charlotte Swimming Club but also my homeland, Algeria, in what turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life.

As a Fulbrighter, I have been presented with numerous opportunities to interact with cultures, learn from varied experiences, and most importantly, represent my country on an international platform. The opportunity to showcase Algerian resilience and strength in the face of a demanding physical challenge such as the Buckner Mission Man Triathlon is a matter of immense pride.

As the day of the Buckner Mission Man Triathlon dawned, the city of Burlington, with its serene hills and mesmerizing morning fog, was a sight to behold. Among the hundreds of athletes, each with their own stories and ambitions, I stood representing my homeland. Wearing my country’s colors, I felt a profound sense of responsibility and an unwavering resolve to do my best.

From the first dive into the cool water to the final sprint towards the finish line, every stroke, every pedal, every stride was driven not just by my personal determination but by the collective strength of my team and the honor of representing Algeria. The cheers of the crowd, the encouraging shouts from my teammates, and the silent roar of my homeland’s pride in my heart all fueled my resolve to reach the end.

Participation in the Buckner Mission Man Triathlon was about more than the medals we earned or the finish line we crossed. It was a journey that symbolized the spirit of unity in the UNC Charlotte Swimming Club, the resilience inherent in every Algerian, and the relentless pursuit of self-improvement.

Mohamed is a 2022 Fulbrighter from Algeria. He studies Computer Science at the University of North Carolina in Charlotte.
