My name is Ahmed, and I am a lecturer at Koya University/ Kurdistan Region of Iraq. I hold a PhD in materials engineering and am working on developing new types of materials that meet the demands of the modern era. I participated in the Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program for Iraq in 2022 at the University of Wyoming and received my Alumni Development Grant (ADG) in October 2024.
My Experience at the Materials Summit Conference in Boston
I attended the “Materials Summit” conference in Boston, Massachusetts, a gathering place for senior global academics with wide-ranging research interest in the field of materials science and engineering. The conference served as a vibrant platform for sharing cutting-edge knowledge and discussing future directions and challenges in the field. Topics covered a wide spectrum of materials science, from semiconductors to construction and industrial materials. Hosted in the United States, this event served as a global hub for collaborative innovation in critical areas like advanced materials.
During the event, I attended different sessions and actively participated in discussions during the seminars, focusing particularly on a central theme of my long-term research goal: developing thermally insulated concrete. I presented a seminar on steel slag and its role in concrete, where I first defined steel slag and then outlined its current impact. I explained the positive effects of steel slag on the mechanical properties of concrete and highlighted its key role in increasing the thermal insulation of concrete, which further amplifies the benefits of recycling. My presentation sparked the interest of researchers with similar goals, and we exchanged contact information for future collaboration.

Professional Development
My primary objective for attending this conference was to expand my academic network and explore opportunities for collaboration, and I believe this goal was successfully achieved. The conference was both inspiring and career-defining. It was my first time attending an international conference abroad and I experienced cutting-edge knowledge in a highly prestigious academic environment by engaging with leading materials scientists. The event deepened my understanding in the field and inspired innovative ideas for my future research. Most notably, I developed a new idea for creating thermal storage concrete from waste materials. This accomplishment has great potential to support global goals for material conservation.

The Personal and Professional Impact of ADG
The grant significantly broadened my scientific perspective by enabling me to participate in an international and prestigious scientific event. The experience provided me with the unique opportunity to meet the world’s senior scientists, discuss my research ideas, and evaluate their feedback. The output was a brainstormed idea that completely reshaped the scope of my future research.
The advantages of the grant exceeded my individual benefits because I will share the knowledge and the experiences I gained with my colleagues. The sharing of updated knowledge with fellow academics will foster collaboration within my academic community and enhance collective expertise.
